dish buzz: the treats truck

The Treats TruckFresh off of their win for Best Dessert Vendor for this year’s Vendy Awards, the Treats Truck was out in full force this Monday afternoon on Wall Street. It took a little time to track down Sugar’s (their truck) location, but finally she was found at the corner of Maiden Lane and Pearl Street.

This outing marks the second time they have ventured to the far South reaches of Manhattan. There’s reason to hope for more such occassions, as Kim (their website labels her the “owner/baker/driver/eater” for the Treats Truck) stated they will be trying to make the Monday stop on Wall Street a regular part of the schedule.

The chocolate sandwich was a thin layer of vanilla creme between two rather thin chocolate cookies. It was their take on an Oreo and it was just perfect. The cookie was soft and the ratio of cookie to creme just perfect.

Their caramel creme sandwich were comprised of two brown sugar cookies with a layer of vanilla creme. Here I found the cookies to be a tad bit on the denser side and that they sort of engulfed the thin layer of creme. The funny thing about this cookie is I think I enjoyed it more after I fully finished chewing a bite, as it allowed the flavors to better mesh. If I had to pick a least favorite of my four sugary selections, it would have to be this one.

Treats from the Treats TruckIf you’re going for bang for your buck, the brownies are a good option. I went for the raspberry brownie. It is a chocolate brownie topped by generous swirls of raspberry jam. It’s hard to say it’s a topping when it goes fully halfway into the brownie itself… and that’s a good thing. It’s a dense brownie but the flavor of the raspberry (oh my this is good – none of that out-of-a-stale-jar taste here) provides a much needed balance. It also leaves it at that chewy texture many brownies miss by being overcooked. This one misses in no way, shape, or form. Dead on.

My impulse buy was the peanut butter and jelly sandwich cookie. Oh myyyyy. I am very glad I made the addition. It is what you might think – a thin (but not too thin) layer of peanut butter and jelly sandwiched between two peanut butter cookies. The peanut butter cookies were fluffy and light and not so peanut buttery as to make the layer in the middle overkill. I think this one is my favorite.

Very good… and totally understandable as to why they walked away this year’s winner. Check out their schedule and be sure to stop by and check it out for yourself. You can also add them on Twitter, like I did, and always be able to find them as well.
