saint’s alp: my nanowrimo tradition

Right when it starts to get cold, I began to gear up for trips to Saint’s Alp. Yes, I am aware there are other places in the city which probably serve tea, but this has become my favorite. They don’t rush you, so it’s a perfect place to order a large pot of tea and sit back for a bit as you write away. I prefer the Williamsburg location since it’s a bit quieter, but the one on 3rd Avenue is on par with regard to service, quality of food, and quality of tea.

For tea, my absolute favorite is their Almond (Black) Milk Tea, served hot. It’s an almond black tea, which is served with hot milk. I don’t usually like milk in my tea, but I really like something about their preparation. When I first tried it, I thought it was made with almond milk, since I’m an avid drinker of almond milk. Instead though the almond flavor is prominent and makes it taste as if it were made with almond milk. I also really like their honey black tea, which is a straight black tea paired with the addition of a honey. It’s perfect for a cold day or when you’re sick. Very soothing on the throat.

Shredded Chicken Noodle Dish - Saint's Alp

Shredded Chicken Noodle Dish - Saint's Alp

Recently I tried their food for the first time. I went with their shredded chicken dish, which was prepared with vermicelli, green tea noodles, and udon noodles, all topped with crispy onions. Green tea noodles? That was definitely a first. It actually tasted exactly like it sounds – noodles with the slight flavor of green tea. I was curious if the flavor would be overwhelming (because do we all really want to feel like we’re chewing on a grean tea bag?), but it actually ended up being only a slight flavor, and didn’t manage to conflict with the savory quality the dish needed to maintain. The overall portion size was quite large. I think I only managed to finish about half of the dish. I thought the dish also might be heavier on noodles than the chicken, but they definitely did not skimp on the chicken.

Supreme Toast - Saint's Alp

For dessert, we tried their “supreme toast with blueberry filling”. It was a thick slice of bread, quartered, topped lightly with condensed milk and blueberry preserves. It was only slightly sweet, which was nice seeing as we were already eating tea which had been sweetened. Perfect simple dessert to accompany the tea.

What’s your favorite teahouse?

green drinks and ‘maters at cafe 202

Cafe 202 - Chelsea Market

Cafe 202 - Chelsea Market

When Cafe 202 popped up on BlackBoard eats, I’d never heard of it. The more I looked online to read more about it and after I went to the restaurant, I understood why. It’s located on the North side of the Chelsea Market, but has no clearly marked sign. With our 30% off code though, I was game for trying it, only previously having been to the Chelsea Market to hit some of the food stores or for the Food2 launch event. We finally walked in and asked the hostess if we were in the right place before we could tell yes, in fact we were. Continue reading

tul-lu’s bakery

When I saw there was a new gluten-free bakery opening up in the East Village, I was curious to check them out. Especially to compare them to the other main gluten-free option I frequent, Babycakes.  Tu-lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery is on the smaller side, though there are stools and a small counter running around the perimeter of the store if you wanna stay. I opted to grab mine and go. Warning, if you do the same, keep your hands pretty steady. There was a minor cupcake avalanche inside my box. Almost a sweet catastrophe. You can either choose a regular sized cupcakes or you can choose to do three minis, which was my choice. That way I could try one of each!

dixie diaries: labor day

i keep small children in line - rar!

i keep small children in line - rar!

Monday, I packed up a bag, the same towel I drug out to Long Beach (those things take up too much space to have more than one), some pee pads, and some treats and Dixie and I headed out to Central Park.

It was a perfect day. Just cool enough that we walked all over and Little Miss Priss never got so winded as to plop down and refuse to walk. Perhaps this is the silver lining to fall’s arrival. The funny thing though was that there was an extraordinary number of rollerbladers, people on scooters, and skateboarders, all maaaaajor hot buttons for Miss Dix. She would start into a mad fit of barking (occasionally progressing into snarling – yikes) and I’d have to swoop in and force her to simmer down. Secretly though I thought it was kind of funny. Made me think of that scene from Big Daddy… you know the one where Adam Sandler and the kid are trying to make the skateboarders or rollerbladers bottom out? Haha…..

I eventually sprawled out and began to read, and just put the loop of Dixie’s leash around my ankle to sort of tether her to something. This worked great while she was putzing around (more like scarfing down grass, but whatever) but when the kids would run by, I found myself bracing as she’d take after them in a tear. Not only does my dog wish to protect me from the likes of strangers in the hall who are potential would-be intruders, but she’s also going to protect me from the insane, crazed 5-7 year-olds in Central Park. That, my friends, is love.

I thought my day had peaked. I’d had my fabulous hot dog, massive tub of French fries, and fountain Diet Coke. I was planning on relaxing a bit more and then taking off to head home and call it an early night when my sister called a little before 4. She was going to do a rooftop BBQ in Brooklyn 6ish and had forgotten to call. All the sudden Dix and I were Brooklyn bound.

We had BBQ chicken (sauce courtesy of Martha’s cookbook and my sister and her boyfriend’s hands!), carrots, and the fabulous finale, homemade peanut butter filled chocolate whoopie pies. Swoon. We sat on the rooftop, a bit chilly but bearable and with such a fabulous view. The little mighty Webber was in full force this evening. It was a fabulous way to spend one of those final few nights outdoors. Fall is fast approaching, for sure.

babycakes baby

image636803983.jpgSo I’ve got a friend getting in from outta town at 10pm-ish and someone (me! me!) is also off tomorrow… So hellooooo personal Friday!

We decided to do a late dinner of sorts. I’ve been here at the hair salon getting my highlights done since 5:30. Yep it’s after 7 and we’re just almost done with all the paper and foil. And the fumes have me a wee bit lightheaded.

But since I was starving and couldn’t make it another 3+ hours until he gets here, I just had to stop into Babycakes seeing as it’s right *there*. I came out with double dark chocolate cookie sandwiches (raspberry cream) and raspberry iced brownies. It’s all vegan, which some people don’t like but I happen to love. Mmmmm.

And now just time to sit back and wait. C’mon blonde. Make your appearance 😉

dixie diaries: personal shopper

image1690950367.jpgDixie and I just made a productive trip to Filene’s where I snagged my birthday dress, among other purchases, courtesy of the great state of Alabama. Thank goodness they finally processed my income tax return. I know it’s technically my money anyhow, but it feels like a little unexpected cushion. She was super patient as I tried on dress after dress. Such a good pup. And she enthusiastically agreed with the winner, along with the second I chose as it was too perfect for my salsa plans this upcoming Saturday. And now? I think this little lady just wants her bed!

corporately packing

Our offices are moving midday on Friday and I realized I haven’t packed as much stuff as I should have by this point. I don’t have a ton of stuff here, but enough that if I don’t start making a dent I’ll be in serious trouble come noon on Friday.

For the first time since I’ve been here, I’m surrounded by cold, impersonal gray padded cubicle walls. No photos smiling back. Depressing. And people wonder why I keep mine decorated?
